Manipulatives

In HOLY MOL-EE!, manipulatives are used to provide a concrete basis for the discussion of abstract concepts. Manipulatives help students stay focused and learn quickly, so both students and teacher experience greater success. Using manipulatives is also a lot of fun.

There are five manipulative-based activities in HOLY MOL-EE!

Activity 1: Cubic Volume Models
Activity 2: Physical Manipulation of Rational Equations

Students make paper models of a cubic centimeter and cubic decimeter.

Students learn the rules for moving variables in rational equations by moving physical variables on a template.

Activity 10: Hands-On Salt Formulas
Activity 11: Physical Unit Conversion Method

Students color, cut out and organize paper ions into their positions on the periodic table. They then use the "ions" to help them balance charges in ion combinations and write correct salt formulas.

Students use beans, buttons, and other small objects to study the downstroke upstroke and dual conversion cancellation patterns used in unit conversion problems.

Activity 12: Balancing Chemical Equations

Students use colored beans (or M&M's or Skittles) to study the meanings of subscript and coefficients in chemical equations. They learn the rules for balancing equations and are able to transfer their knowledge to more sophisticated problems.
