Comments after the lesson on "Three
State Variables" January 2008
The heater in our classroom wasn't working well, so my
first class wanted to go outside in the sun. I took that
opportunity to teach them the movements to "Three State
Variables," a song about Boyle's Law and Charles' Law.
This was the first time I had done any serious teaching
of learning movements to this class. The following comments
were taken from written feedback collected on that day
I love that song. (female)
The class was pretty cool. It was cool because I learned
how to do signals for Boyle’s Law (male)
I like the song. (female)
I had fun when we were outside. I think today I learned
a lot. And I learned the movements. (male)
Today was fun. (male)
Today we learned something interesting in Ms. Jones’
class. We learned about the Three State Variables song,
and it’s about temperature, pressure and volume. It
explains that pressure and volume are like a teeter-totter,
going up and down or going inversely. (male)
I liked how we sang outside to keep us warm. (female)
I hate the songs, still. I understand the song very well,
but I still hate the song. (male)
Today was fun outside. I liked learning out there. The
song was cool. (female)
Today was nice, especially because we had the beginning
of class outside. The song we sang was very helpful and
I hope I will remember it for the quiz. (female)
It was fun going out there and warm up a little. I liked
singing the song and using my hands. (male)
It is fun to sing the song because we interact. (male)
The following are from a class later in the day.
Today I learned a new song that was really catchy. I also
learned more about pressure and volume and if pressure goes
up, then volume goes down. Today was really fun. We learned
songs and hand movements. And today was pretty fun. (female)
Today we went outside to learn new signs for pressure,
volume and temperature. Also we learned a new song. Hope
we learn a new song tomorrow. (male)
The Three Variables Song does help remember things. The
activity with our hands was a good experience. (female)
I think it’s pretty cool that you write those songs.
(female – top student)
This class was very entertaining. I really enjoyed the
movie and learning the hand movements. I also got the equation
problems, which doesn’t always happen. (female)
I learned about the three state variables and how they
work together. The songs do help you remember the stuff.

I liked listening to the pressure song. I think I learn
more with the songs and movements. It is hard sometimes
to memorize things, but the songs make it easier. (female)
I think the videos really helped me understand about Boyle’s
and Charles’ laws. The song also helped me learn some
things. That also helped me remember. The videos and songs
are a real creative and helpful way to learn. (male)
Today’s class was fun. The thing we learned was easy.
But very fun. The videos make it easier to remember things
for the test. (female)
I appreciate the time you spend on looking for ways to
teach us. I really like the songs, because they make me
remember the material. (female)
